GARDEN FLAT

Originally a huge Victorian villa in Belsize Park, this lower ground floor flat barely noticed its garden and magnificent robinia tree.  The brief was to extend and rearrange the living spaces to create an additional study and occasional bedroom. Additionally, the whole shell was insulated and made airtight with triple glazing and the potential for a heat pump. Fireproof moving walls were hidden in joinery and a kitchen spilled into the newly created living space.  With the step down pushed back into the house, the garden now appears to begin inside; judicious cuts in the walls and roof allow light far into the centre of this underground space.  A palette of boldly coloured natural materials connects old with new and ensures homely environment.

HELLO VET CLINICS

In a collaboration with Mero Design, Red Lion Works have fitted out two of veterinary start up Hello Vet’s clinics.  They are warm and inviting spaces that avoid the clinical qualities of mainstream animal treatment facilities.  With a brilliant brief of openness from Hello Vet, the spaces have no secrets and are full of light.  Both the projects shown here are a combination of well-crafted bespoke joinery and art work by Mero Design and made by Maxwell Pinborough with carefully selected commercial objects to keep to a sensible budget.

RAW STEEL ADDITION TO LISTED BUILDING

A delicate addition to a listed early 20th century house, expressed in raw steel but made entirely out of timber with wood fibre insulation.  This extension was commissioned to accommodate new plant needed to switch from gas to heat pump technology.  Also containing a utility room and storage it was carefully shaped to allow for maximum natural light and minimum harm to the listed host building.

MID CENTURY RESTORATION

The heavy clinker brick and dark hardwood parquet of this 1950s terraced house in Hampstead is joyfully refreshed and brought up to date with a more energy conscious age.  A rich colour wheel and gravity defying brick ceiling make it clear what the spirit of this building has always been.  A new kitchen room added; intricately designed so its apparent solidity still allows light and fresh air to come in, the ‘massive’ roof is held by an oak column.  The whole building is now fully insulated, with its concrete tiled roof carefully re-laid with solar panels and a heat pump concealed in delicately through-ventilated house.  Inside the parquet was taken away, restored and re-laid over insulated underfloor heating; the garden paving was stacked and reconfigured in a bid to reduce landfill.
